UL Standard - Safety for Motor Operated Water Pumps
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is proposing the Standard for Safety for
Motor-Operated Water Pumps, UL 778, for recognition as an American National
Standard.
UL 778 covers submersible and non-submersible motor-operated pumps intended
to be used in ordinary locations in accordance with the National Electrical
Code, NFPA 70.
UL 778 does not cover pumps rated more than 600 volts, pumps using universal
motors rated more than 250 volts, pumps for fire protection service, pumps for
use as or with swimming or wading pool equipment, therapeutic baths, and similar
equipment, nor pumps covered by other individual requirements. These requirements
do not cover pressure controls or pressure tanks that are intended for use in
water or other liquid systems.
A pump not covered by any of the definitions in Glossary, Section 3, and a pump
intended for use with liquids other than water, shall be evaluated on the basis
of its compliance with the requirements in this standard, and further examination
and tests required to determine whether it is acceptable for the purpose.
UL is seeking review and comment from interested individuals and organizations
to help develop a consensus upon which recognition of UL 778 by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) can be based. ANSI is a clearinghouse for
information on standards and coordinates development of national consensus standards
through voluntary action.
Anyone interested should contact comm 2000 as indicated below for pricing and
