Revolutionary New 4-Stroke Technology
Stihl, Inc., the Virginia Beach manufacturer of chain saws and outdoor power
equipment, announced its latest technological achievement, a new mixture-lubricated
4-stroke engine known as the Stihl 4-Mix?. With this revolutionary technology,
Stihl will not only meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "phase two"
emissions standards taking effect in 2005 and the regulations set forth by the
California Air Regulation Board (CARB), but the company will also provide professional
users with the ideal outdoor power equipment solution of the future, offering
all the benefits of 2-stroke and 4-stroke engine technologies combined.
The Stihl 4-Mix? will offer professionals an emission-compliant solution that
will allow the OPE industry to continue operating despite impending CARB and
EPA regulations.
"Emission regulation is a worldwide challenge, one which is especially critical
in the U.S. given the standards imposed by CARB and the EPA," said Steinhauser.
"Stihl has developed a new approach to reduce emissions without compromising
performance or engine size. Just as important, we have provided OPE professionals
with a solution that will safeguard the future of landscaping.
While traditionally, low emission engine technology has been accompanied by
a sacrifice in product performance and an increase in product weight, the Stihl
4-Mix? is a unique solution that offers a lower emission alternative to the
typical 2-stroke engine.
The new Stihl 4-Mix? lubrication system is patented by Andreas Stihl AG &
Co. The lubrication system runs on the standard 50:1 fuel-mix, thus eliminating
the need for a separate oil chamber. The fewer number of parts affords the Stihl
4-Mix? a more compact design and simpler, less frequent service investigations
than a typical 4-stroke engine. And, given its unique construction, the Stihl
4-Mix? engine weighs approximately six ounces more than the Stihl 2-stroke counterpart.
The first Stihl product to be manufactured with the Stihl 4-Mix? engine will
be the FS 110 grass trimmer, which will be released in California in Spring
2002 and will be available nationwide later this year. Powered by the new Stihl
4-Mix? engine, the FS 110 will offer 17 percent more torque and 15 percent
less vibration than the popular 2-stroke Stihl FS 85.
