Detroit Edison Offers Home Surge Protection

Power surges can mean trouble for electric appliances, but there is help. Detroit Edison now offers protection to your entire home from power surges, short bursts of electricity that are unexpected and uncontrolled, and can be caused by conditions both outside and inside your home. Power surges can potentially cause partial or even complete destruction of the circuits in electric devices.

Detroit Edison offers residential customers three different levels of surge protection. The basic package safeguards your home's entire electrical system from external surges exceeding 150 volts. The expanded package safeguards your whole house plus either the telephone or cable TV. The total protection package safeguards your electrical system plus your telephone and cable TV from eternal surges.

"This program provides our customers a tool to protect their appliances and sensitive electronic equipment," said George Jackson Jr. director of Customer Marketing for Detroit Edison. "Solid state electronics are in nearly every electric device in our homes, including personal computers, home entertainment centers and smart appliances, and all are susceptible to electrical surges caused by lightning strikes, tree limbs touching power lines, nearby large motor-driven operations starting up, and many other external causes."

Power surges don't only come from outside sources. Refrigerators, freezers and other motor-driven appliances can cause internal power surges that can damage your electrical systems. That's why Detroit Edison also is offering additional plug-in surge protection devices to help safeguard sensitive home equipment or appliances from internally generated surges.

High-voltage surges are not the only concern. Low voltage or a momentary power outage also can seriously affect some home office equipment. Detroit Edison offers Uninterruptible Power supply products for computers that provide from six to 20 minutes of continued operation during a power failure. In addition, special software automatically saves any files you were working on and shuts down you computer, even when you're not at your computer.
