Three Things Learned From Year 2000

1. Electricity deregulation has a long way to go. Power shortages and price spikes in California last year caused deregulation supporters to take pause and re-evaluate how efforts should unroll in other states.

2. Natural gas is not a sure thing. The commodity fell out of favor when distributors announced prices would increase by as much as 40 percent. Although the increase isn't great enough to halt technological development, greater initial expense of some natural gas technologies needed to be cost-justified.

3. Keep an eye on the internet. Expect start-up e-commerce companies to be purchased by larger competitors and for some of those larger competitors to expand their online services.
