High Efficiency External Combustion Power Module

DTE Energy Technologies, an unregulated subsidiary of DTE Energy Co., today announced the signing of an agreement with STM Power Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich., to develop and sell high-efficiency energy/now? external combustion power modules worldwide except in Asia. The agreement is the latest in a series of partnership agreements that have positioned DTE Energy Technologies as a worldwide leader in building a broad portfolio of distributed generation solutions for homes, businesses and industries.

This new product, the 25-kilowatt (kW) energy|now? ENE250 power module, is powered by an external combustion engine developed by STM Power Inc. that burns gaseous and liquid fuel that include natural gas, diesel, landfill, bio and flare gases. The STM 4-120 engine has many advantages for distributed power, runs smoothly and quietly, does not require a muffler and can be as efficient as the best internal combustion engines. It meets all existing environmental stvandards. In volume production, the STM engines will be cost-competitive with gasoline or diesel engines.

As part of a separate agreement being negotiated between STM Power Inc., and Delco Remy International of Anderson, Ind., Delco Remy plans to manufacture the power modules. Ricardo Engineering of Romulus, Mich., also is participating via another agreement in the engineering of the engine via its preliminary agreement with STM Power Inc.

"The energy|now? external combustion power module is an excellent complement to the growing portfolio of distributed energy products of DTE Energy Technologies," said Paul Horst, president of DTE Energy Technologies. "The unit is ideal for independent power production, peak shaving and base load operation, for light commercial customers who currently pay among the highest rates per kilowatthour for electricity and for applications where ?free' gas is available in the form of flare, landfill or bio gasses."

Horst said that the new generator expands DTE Energy Technologies' distributed generation product line. The company currently is developing a 400-kW energy|now? mini-turbine in partnership with Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. of Toronto, and Turbo Genset Co., Ltd. Of the United Kingdom. DTE Energy Technologies is the four-state (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana) distributor of the 7-kW Plug Power residential fuel cell, which will be available next year. In addition, DTE Energy Technologies markets and sells conventional stand-by generators for residential and commercial customers, as well as other energy-related products and services.

DTE Energy Technologies is a diversified high-technology company offering a broad range of products and services to solve the energy-related challenges of commercial, residential and industrial customers. Among these are energy systems that provide both on-site and standby power.
