Presidents Message For February, 2001
On behalf of the Chief Engineers Association of Chicagoland, I would like to
extend our congratulations and best wishes to Brian Hickey, the new President
and Business Manager of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local
399. Brian is well known and respected by all of us, and we wish him a great
deal of success and happiness in the many years to come.
Thank you to everyone that attended our December Educational meeting. Unfortunately,
severe winter weather that evening contributed to a very small turnout. For
those of you that attempted to attend but were caught in what the news media
referred to as the worst rush hour traffic ever in Chicago history, thank you
for the attempt.
As of this writing, we are feeling the effects of an extremely severe winter,
the kind we have not had in several years. Operating building HVAC equipment
can be its most difficult during severe cold, and this fact often eludes the
people we provide service for. Add to this the skyrocketing costs of natural
gas, and your job becomes just a little more difficult, and a whole lot more
stressful.
It is important that you recognize stress and the effects it can have upon
you. According to the OSHA Compliance Encyclopedia from BLR, Inc., stress can
cause these harmful effects to your body.
- Tension headaches
- Sleeplessness
- Ulcers
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Depression
- Lowered resistance to illness of all sorts
- Inability to concentrate on what's important. Recognize the effects from
stress and take steps to deal with it, please.
Please remember to visit our website, chiefengineer.org. This exciting site,
designed for Chief Engineers, is full of information intended to provide you
with important information. A new feature, "Ask a Chief," allows all of us to
ask questions and receive information in a public forum. This permits all of
us to pool our knowledge and help each other solve problems.
That is the entire concept behind this organization, to network and communicate
with your peers. To share the wisdom and insight which allows you to perform
your profession to the best of your abilities. No one person has the answers
to everything, but by networking and sharing our thoughts, ideas, and experiences,
all the answers can be found.
If you know of any qualified candidates that would enjoy the benefits from
this organization, encourage them to become a member. It is easier than ever
to join, applications can be made directly from our website. For this association
to maintain its current strength and success, our membership must continue to
grow. A major source of new membership is through "word of mouth" from our existing
membership.
The magazine you currently hold is made possible through the advertising dollars
of our Associate Membership. It is through their continued loyalty that the
success we currently enjoy is made possible. Please support them in return.
If you require goods or services, turn to the back page of this publication
where you will find a list of this issue's advertisers. It is by mutually supporting
each other that we will continue to be a successful ortanization.
Your thoughts and comments are important to me, and I look forward to and appreciate
hearing from our membership. If you wish to communicate with me, my preferred
method is via e-mail at Dghwwii@aol.com.
If this is not convenient for you then please forward all communications through
the CEAC office. I do respond to all correspondence.
Sincerely,
Daniel Hickey
President, CEAC
