New Journal Provides Cutting-Edge Management and Leadership Information
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) announces the release of Leadership
and Management in Engineering, a cutting-edge journal focusing on the art and
practice of management and leadership in the civil engineering community. Filled
with valuable tips and techniques, this journal offers first-hand experience
on project management, marketing, budgeting, strategic planning, conflict management,
and performance improvement. Special columns feature industry news and case
studies on topics ranging from capital accumulation and retention to how to
manage people and profits.
Previously, part of ASCE's Journal of Management in Engineering, Leadership
and Management in Engineering will feature articles and news directed at practicing
engineer managers. Published quarterly, the journal seeks to advance practice
and understanding of leadership and management for civil engineering and other
technical fields through coverage of important news, strategies, and ideas/philosophies.
Each issue of Leadership and Management in Engineering contains feature articles,
where contributing authors provide useful information to today's engineer manager.
Case studies present an overview of current practice, or study of management
and leadership at different companies or institutions. Columns, such as The
Forum, feature snippets of managerial wisdom and wit from people and publications
all over the world. CEO Corner present interviews with leading industry executives
to "get the skinny" on how they deal with leading in the global economy. The
Information Technology (IT) Manager column provides tips and lessons in using
technology to achieve better performance.
The inaugural issue of the journal, scheduled for release in January, 2001,
will focus on "Recruiting and Retaining High Quality Personnel." Special editions
will focus an entire edition on one issue. Areas of interest include leadership
(teamwork; project management; team building; mentoring; department, branch
and office management; law and ethics; technology and innovation management;
conflict management; negotiation processes; and change management), career development
(life-long learning, distance learning, networking, and more), human resources
(diversity, productivity management, incentives, feedback techniques, re-engineering,
and organization design), and strategic planning (decision-making; partnering;
financial management; marketing and sales; corporate and public policy procedures
and management; knowledge management; risk management; quality improvement processes,
techniques, and tools; globalization; legislature and regulatory issues; and
economic and environmental sustainability).
