Top Students Compete For International Competition
Four of the nations top heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration
(HVACR) students competed in trials to represent the United States as a member
of “Team USA” during the 2005 World Skills Competition to be held
May 26-29, 2005 in Helsinki, Finland.
The trials were conducted on February 8, during the 2005 International Air
Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration (AHR) Exposition, held at the Orange
County Convention
Center in Orlando, Florida. The four competitors participating were selected
because they were the high scorers at the 2003 and 2004 SkillsUSA Competition
held in Kansas City, Missouri. The candidates were Bradley Webb from Brandenburg,
Kentucky, Ryan Hanna from Barboursville, West Virginia, Shawn Wasielewski from
Easton, Pennsylvania, and Michael Kelly from Las Vegas, Nevada.
During the trials, the competitors demonstrated their proficiency in identifying
and solving system problems, as well as general troubleshooting techniques.
Rotating through four stations, each competitor’s mechanical and electrical skills
were tested on the following HVACR equipment: a self-contained refrigeration
system, an operating 134A refrigeration system, an R-410A heat pump, and a two
ton Puron AC split system with a five KW eclectic heat package. Additionally
each contestant was administered a NATE Core exam and underwent a personal interview. “These
competitors represent the best of the best and are the future of our industry,” said
Mary Garvelink, President of PHCC.
“This was a hard fought competition. All of the candidates were excellent
technicians and as far as I am concerned, they were all winners,” said
Ray Mach, ARI’s Director of Education and Co-Chair of the event. “We
feel the competition will underscore the fact that if you enter the HVACR field,
and apply yourself; you will end up a winner. Hopefully this will help attract
the candidates the HVACR industry needs.”
