Glavin Security Secures Cook County Building
On October 17, 2003, while the flames of 69 W. Washington were still being extinguished,
ground work was already underway to change building fire codes in Chicago. Glavin
Security was on hand to provide counsel and guidance to building engineers and
building managers as they addressed these code changes and to improve the safety
and security for the hundreds of county employees that have just returned to
work recently.

Glavin has completed stairwell electric lock release systems in several buildings
over the last few years, including the John Hancock Center. They have experience
with a wide range of solutions to meet the current requirements in the new
code as well as the expertise to guide organizations through the complexities
of the
changes.
The changes in code were made to improve the safety and security of all staff
and visitors and although the requirements of the new code affect each property
differently, it is important for building engineers and building managers to
understand the way that these changes affect them.
“Glavin Security has time and again proven their value to our understanding
of security-related issues affecting office buildings. Tom Glavin’s knowledge
of code requirements, combined with his many years of practical experience have
helped us greatly in advising our building members on important security issues
such as the City’s recent stairwell door ordinance. We’re proud and
grateful to have Glavin as one of our active members,” said Michael Cornicelli,
Director of Government Affairs for the Building Owners and Managers Association
of Chicago.
After the tragedy occurred on October 17th, Glavin was hired to address the
problems directly relating to the stairwell locking system at 69 West Washington.
They
determined a solution that included installing new doors, electrified hardware
and modifications to the doorframes so that they could be relabeled by Underwriters’ Laboratory.
This system meets the new code requirement by unlocking all stairwell doors electronically
upon actuation of the building’s fire alarm, eliminating confusion and
hazards for employees in case of evacuation, while still securing doors in
times of non-emergencies.
Due to the urgency and sensitivity of the project there was a very tight window
to complete the work. Working closely with the hardware manufacturer, IR Security & Safety,
Glavin was able to obtain the locks and other hardware in an unprecedented
manner and consequently was able to replace the 80 doors and hardware in ten
days!
“Although this project was very comples, Glavin was able to quickly design
the system and select the hardware necessary to complete this project within
a very short period of time. Tom Glavin’s professionalism, expertise and
attention to detail was instrumental in the success of this project,” said
Peter Brenia, IR Security & Safety Consultants, Chicago.
Glavin Security has been servicing the Chicagoland area for over 50 years
and will continue to provide quality products and services to all its customers.
