International Participation in BACnet Grows

A liaison to improve use of BACnet® in Russia has been established by ASHRAE.

The liaison with the Russian Association of Engineers for Heating, Ventilation, Heat-Supply and Building Thermal Physics (ABOK), the Russian equivalent to ASHRAE, was formed during ASHRAE's 2003 Winter Meeting.

The committee maintains ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135-2001, BACnet - A Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks, established the working relationship with the ABOK Intelligent Buildings Committee.

"ABOK wants to improve the recognition and deployment of BACnet in Russia, including translating the standard in Russian, conducting training courses and developing aids for specifying engineers," Bill Swan, vice chair of the 135 committee, said.

ABOK also intends to become active in International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/Technical Committee 205, Building Environment Design, the committee that sponsored the recent approval of BACnet as an ISO standard, according to Swan.

Also in Chicago, the 135 committee saw expanded international cooperation with participants from Canada, Finland, Germany, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom attending its meeting. The European Community and Japan already have established liaisons with ASHRAE.

One product of this international collaboration was the recommendation for public review of addendum 135d, which specifies a mapping between BACnet and the European Installation Bus (EIB/Konnex).

Also during the ASHRAE meeting, a delegation from BACnet Interest Group - Europe (BIG-EU)

met with Testing Laboratories (BTL) working group to coordinate efforts to advance the BACnet conformance testing program conducted by BTL.

"We are pleased that we have been able to formalize an agreement with BIG-EU and look forward to increased cooperation in our joint testing, listing and certification programs," Jim Lee, BMA president said. "These steps will undoubtedly accelerate the adoption of BACnet technology around the world."
