Generator Operators Certification Sees Increase in Demand
The Chief Engineers Association Generator Operators Certification program surpassed
the one-thousand mark of certification issuance this past March with demand
for additional certification testing still increasing throughout the industry.
Developed by the Chief Engineers in 1999 as a response to a City of Chicago
ordinance requiring competent operation of generator units, as well as the increase
in the number of standby and co-generation units being placed in large commercial
buildings, the certification program has well exceeded the expectations of the
Association.
The certification program includes a three hour seminar followed by the certification
examination. Participant size has been limited to 140, with every session being
completely filled since the program started. Certification Committee members
report that from the very beginning, it has been necessary to maintain a "wait
list" comprised of individuals who did not make the 140 participant cut
off in time. These people are then notified of the next scheduled examination
once a date is set by the committee.
Commercial, industrial and institutional building managers have quickly recognized
the certification program. According to reports received by the Chief Engineer,
human relations managers have asked prospective engineering employees if they
have the Generator Operators Certification during employment interviews. This
industry recognition has played a significant role in increasing the demand
for the certification.
